Chlorhexidine is a proven anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent and has been shown in numerous studies to decrease gingivitis. Chlorhexidine has a quick onset and minimal systemic uptake, making it an excellent choice for oral antisepsis3. Both the WSAVA Global Guidelines and the American Veterinary Dental College are strongly supportive of the use of Chlorhexidine in oral care.

Dentisept contains both Chlorhexidine and a unique patented polymer. This polymer forms a glue-like consistency when in contact with saliva and binds to the enamel of the teeth. When Dentisept is adhered to the teeth it forms a depot of chlorhexidine that acts as an antiseptic for up to 24 hours. The WSAVA guidelines highlight the importance of contact time of Chlorhexidine in dental care.
“Chlorhexidine has been proven to have efficacy as an oral antiseptic which may reduce plaque…However, sufficient contact time is likely not achieved when using as a rinse.” (WSAVA Dental Guidelines 2018)3
Dentisept has a wide range of uses within oral care:
- Day to day oral care
- Periodontal disease
- Post-operatively (including socket packing)
- Oral ulceration and sores
- Oral tumours and polyps
- Calicivirus ulceration in cats
It can also be used on the skin and is particularly useful in skin fold and interdigital dermatitis as it has excellent adherence to the skin.
